Britney Spears: Remember When?
They say life has its ups and downs; and while for some life could be a little sweet or a little harsh, ask Britney Spears because for sure, her life had been one hell of a roller-coaster ride.
As the new highly anticipated host of The X Factor, it might be safe to safe that pop legend Britney Spears already has her life sailing safe and consistently on the right path. She’s made a successful, full-blown comeback with Femme Fatale, proving just how intangible her name is in the industry.
They say wisdom comes with age and maturity but we all know learning is a process. With her life being an open invitation to all, it’s no secret that despite being one of the best-selling artists of all time (with 100 million albums sold worldwide), Britney Spears is just as human as everybody else.
It’s TMRP Throwback Thursday and we look back at Britney Spears’ most memorable moments.
Remember when… Britney Spears wore a tight-fitting, red-latex catsuit for the music video of Oops… I did it Again? Yep, this is definitely Britney’s signature song and music video with countless recognition and sales worldwide. (Maybe, the song reached Mars too, if the music video was any indication.)
This also marked the start of—what everybody knew as—the Britney Spears era.
Remember when… Britney Spears showed more, more skin in the music video of I’m A Slave For You? If you’re a legit fan, you will remember this. It may not be one of Britney’s chart-topping singles but this definitely one of her most daring music videos ever. I mean… have you seen her abs, her moves, and man, the belly dancing?
Remember when… Britney Spears’ marriage lasted for 55 hours? Oh yes, long before Kim Kardashian and Kris Humpries, there had been Britney’s nuptial with childhood sweetheart Jason Allen Alexander in 2004. They were married at The Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas and 55 hours later, the marriage was annulled, with Britney claiming she doesn’t understand her own actions.
Remember when… Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake used to date? Ha, yep. Their relationship lasted for three years and when it ended, Justin released the song Cry Me A River which featured a Britney look-alike in the music video. Those who cried after hearing the break-up news, raise your hands. *raising my hand
Remember when… Britney Spears released ‘In the Zone’ in 2003? Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, National Public Radio listed the album as one of “The 50 Most Important Recording of the Decade”. It includes the tracks “Me Against the Music”, her collaboration with Madonna; “Toxic”— the Grammy winner for Best Dance Recording; “Everytime”, and “Outrageous”.
Remember when… Britney Spears wore diamonds; and I mean, nothing but diamonds? If you think I’m A Slave For You was daring, try watching the music video of ‘Toxic’—the song that won Britney her first and by far her only Grammy Award in 2005.
Remember when… Britney Spears married Kevin Federline? Yup. I think, the world remembers it oh too well. They even starred in their own reality show, Britney & Kevi: Chaotic. They married in 2004 had two adorable babies and then divorced in 2006. Well, at least, their marriage was still longer than that of Kim and Kris.
Remember when… Britney Spears hit rock bottom? Yeah. Again, I think the world remembers it too well. This time in 2007 was a scary time for all true Britney fans: getting rehabilitated for drug use, shaving her head, attacking a paparazzo with an umbrella. Well, if Britney made it through 2007, you can make it whatever you’re going through right now. In her official website, Britney admitted, “I truly hit rock bottom. Till this day I don’t think that it was alcohol or depression. [...] was like a bad kid running around with ADD.”
Well, we all remember these:
Remember when… Britney Spears came back and said, “It’s Britney bitch”? She performed ‘Gimme More’ at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards and that performance was just plainly… well… it’s Britney. David Willis of BBC even said that her performance would “go down in the history books as being one of the worst to grace the MTV Awards”. But, do not omit the part that her comeback album, Blackout, took the music industry by storm. The Times even hailed it as the fifth best pop album of the decade, as The Observer said, “Britney has delivered the best album of her career, raising the bar for modern pop music with an incendiary mix of Timbaland’s Shock Value and her own back catalogue.”
And just this year, the album was added to the library and archives of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Despite it all, do you remember when… Britney Spears came back in 2008 and her status in the industry has been reinstated since then? Yep, you can bend and twist her but Britney Spears is simply unbreakable. ‘Piece of Me’, off the album Blackout won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.
She released her sixth studio album, Circus, in 2008 and it easily became one of the fastest-selling albums of the years.
There you have it: Britney Spears on a timeline, and as they say it, the rest is history. She went from the girl next door to the head-bitch-in-charge to a damsel in distress but at the end of the day, she’s judging The X Factor for $15 million and has a three-carat diamond ring from her long-time boyfriend, Jason Trawick.
We should all have a new mantra: If Britney made it through 2007, we can make it through today.
